Is Arthroscopy an option for you?
Your orthopedic surgeon may recommend an arthroscopic procedure if you have injured or damaged your meniscus, cartilage, tendons and/or ligaments. It may be an option if you don’t get relief from nonsurgical treatments such as:
- Braces or splints
- Medications and steroid injections
- Physical therapy
- Rest
Consult Dr. Biren Nadkarni, a Senior Orthopedic Consultant and Surgeon, if you are feeling pain in your joints and it’s not getting healed by non-conventional treatment. What is the difference between Arthroscopy and Arthroplasty?
Arthroscopy is a minimal-invasive procedure involving a tiny incision
to allow the insertion of a state-of-the-art scope to look into your affected
joint. The scope has a camera on end to transmit images to a monitor for
surgeons to view. The second incision allows orthopedic surgeons to insert
small instruments to assess, diagnose and even treat issues with joints
immediately. Arthroscopy can be performed on joints including knees, hips,
shoulders, ankles, elbows, and wrists.
On the other hand, Arthroplasty is more commonly known as joint replacement
surgery. It is a major open surgery in which the degenerative joints are
replaced with an artificial joint. The surgery aims to relieve joint pain and
increase the range of movement, thereby helping to improve mobility.
Consult Dr. Biren Nadkarni, a Senior Orthopedic Consultant, and Surgeon, to
know more about the options you can opt to relieve the pain. He will be
available in person at his clinic - Joint & Bone Solutions situated at Hauz
Khas, New Delhi. Dr. Biren can also be reached at Sitaram Bhartia Institute and
Holy Family Hospital also.

Treat Meniscus injury without surgery
There are
different types of meniscus tears — some tears heal on their own while others
require surgical treatment. If the tear is in the inner two-thirds, which lack
blood flow, the tear cannot be repaired and may need to be trimmed or removed
surgically. However, if the tear is on the outer one-third of the meniscus,
chances are it may heal on its own because it has a rich blood supply that
helps in regenerating meniscus tissue — or help it heal after surgical repair.
The non-surgical treatment for tears that can heal on their own may include:
• Physical therapy
• RICE: Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation
• Anti-inflammatory medications
For more severe tears, surgery is typically the best course of treatment. Let
your Orthopedic surgeon take the decision on the kind of treatment after
examining the knee.
Consult Dr. Biren Nadkarni, a Senior Orthopedic Consultant and Surgeon, if you
feel pain, swelling or stiffness, it could be Meniscus Tear that may require
surgery. Dr. Biren Nadkarni will be available in person at his clinic - Joint
& Bone Solutions situated at Hauz Khas, New Delhi as well as through online
consultation. He can be reached at Sitaram Bhartia Institute and Holy Family
Hospital at Okhla also.

Meniscus Tear
The meniscus is a piece of cartilage in your knee providing cushioning effect and protects bones from getting rubbed with each other. However, like other knee injuries, meniscus tears can happen to anyone involved in high-impact activities. It occurs when an athlete changes direction suddenly or occurs at the same time as other knee injuries like an ACL injury. In fact, a meniscal tear is one of the most frequently occurring cartilage injuries of the knee. When it happens, you might feel
• A popping sensation
• Swelling or stiffness
• Pain, especially when twisting or rotating your knee
• Difficulty in bending and straightening the leg
• Feeling of the locked knee in place when you try to move it
If you feel pain, swelling or stiffness, it could be Meniscus Tear that may require surgery. Consult Dr. Biren Nadkarni, a Senior Orthopedic Consultant, and Surgeon, at his clinic - Joint & Bone Solutions situated at Hauz Khas, New Delhi as well as through online consultation. What does the ACL injury involve?
ACL reconstruction surgery is an arthroscopic (small incisions) procedure in which torn or damaged ACL is replaced with tendon tissue. The tendon graft is usually harvested and prepared from hamstring muscles from the patient's own body.
In this procedure, the surgeon will make two to three small incisions around the knee and insert an arthroscope into the knee joint to inspect the ligament injury. Once the damage is confirmed, the surgeon will remove the torn ACL and put a tendon graft in its place.
Follow the instructions provided by your doctor for fast recovery and stability of your knee.

ACL Surgery Recovery Time.
Following are a few general guidelines following an ACL surgery:
𝐖𝐞𝐞𝐤 𝟏-𝟑: Rest, good nutritional intake, and use of ice can help in strength gain and faster recovery.
𝐖𝐞𝐞𝐤 𝟒-𝟔: By the end of week 6, the patient may feel the greatest recovery as remodeling of the tendon replacement, or graft, occurs.
𝐖𝐞𝐞𝐤 𝟔-𝟏𝟐: During this phase, the knee gains its full functional strength to handle the stress. Patients can indulge in more activity-specific strengthening and weight-bearing exercises.
𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡𝐬 𝟑-𝟔:Full healing has occurred and the knee has gained sufficient strength to enable patients to return to high-impact activities.
𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡𝐬 𝟔-𝟏𝟐: Improving strength and functionality allows Orthopedic Surgeon and his team to clear patients for daily normal activities or sports.

How long does one take to return to work after ACL Surgery?
An ACL rupture is a significant injury and one must commit himself to a rehabilitation program after an ACL reconstruction surgery to maximize the surgical outcome. Your physiotherapist will guide you through this rehab process considering your specific needs and your response to treatment.
• In the initial weeks, light exercises are recommended to restore joint motion and muscle function
• After 2 weeks, you might feel little or no pain. Try to include little heavy exercises to gain full knee extension
• After 6 weeks, strengthening exercises are included to strengthen quadriceps, hamstring, calf, and hip strength
• In between 6-12 weeks the focus will be on improving muscle strength, coordination, and balance
• At the 3 month mark you may begin exercises like running. However, keep watching the intensity of the exercise and do not overstress which may lead to reinjury
• Between 3-6 months, you should feel like your knee strength and function are improving every week. The focus should be to gradually return to pre-injury activities
• Most patients can expect to return to the demands of their sports and activities between 6-9 months after surgery.
Consult Dr. Biren Nadkarni, a Senior Orthopedic Consultant, and Surgeon, for the best advice on ACL surgery and Rehab after it. He will be available in person at his clinic - Joint & Bone Solutions situated at Hauz Khas, New Delhi as well as through online consultation.
