What conditions are treated with Arthroscopy Surgery?

Arthroscopy is a procedure in which an orthopedic surgeon inserts a narrow tube attached to a fiber-optic camera through a small incision to diagnose and treat joint conditions affecting joints such as the knee, shoulder, elbow, ankle, hip, and wrist. The camera at the end of the instrument transmits images to the monitor that help surgeons to view the inside of the joint for better treatment.

Conditions treated with arthroscopy include:
• Lose bone fragments
• Damaged or torn cartilage
• Inflamed joint linings
• Torn ligaments
• Scarring within joints

Consult Dr. Biren Nadkarni, a Senior Orthopedic Consultant and Surgeon, if you are feeling pain in your joints. Dr. Biren Nadkarni will be available in person at his clinic - Joint & Bone Solutions situated at Hauz Khas, New Delhi. He can be reached at Sitaram Bhartia Institute and Holy Family Hospital also.

What is the Difference between Meniscus Repair and Partial Meniscectomy?

The meniscus is a shock-absorbing pad of cartilage in the knee that lubricates, supports, and protects the bones in the knee joint. An athletic injury, heavy lifting, or aging can damage the meniscus which may lead to a progression of osteoarthritis. Minor tears can often heal on their own without surgery, but more severe tears often require surgery. Depending on the extent of the injury and the importance of preserving the meniscus as much as possible, an orthopedic surgeon may recommend meniscus repair or meniscectomy surgery.

In meniscus repair, the surgeon inserts an arthroscope (optic tube) along the tear to bind it using sutures. Over time, these sutures are absorbed by the body leaving healed and repaired meniscus.  However, in meniscectomy, a tiny device is inserted to remove the torn meniscus and the damaged part of the meniscus is trimmed to give it a smooth edge known as a partial meniscectomy. The recovery time is lesser as compared to recovery in meniscus repair.

If you are feeling pain around the knee, and it increases while putting pressure or weight, it could be a meniscus tear. Consult Dr. Biren Nadkarni, a Senior Orthopedic Consultant, and Surgeon in person at his clinic - Joint & Bone Solutions situated at Hauz Khas, New Delhi. He can also be reached at Sitaram Bhartia Institute and Holy Family Hospital.
