An ACL rupture is a significant injury and one must commit himself to a rehabilitation program after an ACL reconstruction surgery to maximize the surgical outcome. Your physiotherapist will guide you through this rehab process considering your specific needs and your response to treatment.
• In the initial weeks, light exercises are recommended to restore joint motion and muscle function
• After 2 weeks, you might feel little or no pain. Try to include little heavy exercises to gain full knee extension
• After 6 weeks, strengthening exercises are included to strengthen quadriceps, hamstring, calf, and hip strength
• In between 6-12 weeks the focus will be on improving muscle strength, coordination, and balance
• At the 3 month mark you may begin exercises like running. However, keep watching the intensity of the exercise and do not overstress which may lead to reinjury
• Between 3-6 months, you should feel like your knee strength and function are improving every week. The focus should be to gradually return to pre-injury activities
• Most patients can expect to return to the demands of their sports and activities between 6-9 months after surgery.
