Importance of Healthy Diet in recovery after Knee Replacement Surgery

A knee replacement surgery can be a life-changing procedure, restoring mobility and reducing pain. However, the road to a successful recovery doesn't end in the operating room. Adopting a healthy diet during the recovery period is crucial for optimizing healing and regaining strength.

A balanced and nutritious diet provides essential nutrients that aid in tissue repair, reduce inflammation, and promote overall well-being. Incorporating foods rich in lean protein such as fish, poultry, beans, and legumes, aids in rebuilding muscle and supporting the recovery process. Additionally, plenty of fruits and vegetables provide vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, which can boost the immune system and enhance healing.

Moreover, maintaining a healthy weight is important to minimize stress on the knee joint. A diet focused on whole grains, low-fat dairy, and healthy fats can assist in weight management.

Also, stay hydrated, as water is essential for tissue repair and to prevent constipation—a common issue after surgery. Finally, consult with your healthcare provider or a registered dietitian to personalize your diet plan according to your specific needs.

Importance of staying active in older age to prevent joint pain

As we age, joint pain can become a common concern, limiting our mobility and overall quality of life. However, one of the most effective ways to prevent joint pain and maintain joint health is by staying active and incorporating regular exercise into our daily routine.

Engaging in physical activity has numerous benefits for our joints. It helps to strengthen the muscles around the joints, providing better support and reducing stress on the joints themselves. Regular exercise also improves flexibility, range of motion, and lubrication of the joints, which can alleviate pain and stiffness.

Low-impact exercises such as walking, swimming, cycling, and yoga are especially beneficial for older individuals. These activities are gentle on the joints while still providing ample opportunities for movement and cardiovascular health.

Remember to consult Dr. Biren Nadkarni before starting any new exercise regimen, especially if you have existing joint issues. He can provide guidance tailored to your specific needs and help you create a safe and effective exercise plan.

Consult Dr. Biren Nadkarni, Senior Orthopedic Consultant and Surgeon, for all the tips to make changes in your lifestyle. What is Patellar Realignment Surgery?

Patellar realignment surgery is a procedure that is used to correct the alignment of the patella (kneecap) when it is not properly positioned in the groove of the femur bone. This condition is called patellar instability or patellofemoral instability.

During the procedure, the surgeon will make an incision in the knee and reposition the patella so that it is properly aligned. The goal of the surgery is to reduce pain and improve the function of the knee joint.

Patients who may benefit from patellar realignment surgery include those who have recurrent patellar dislocations or chronic pain in the knee joint that has not responded to non-surgical treatments.

Consult your case with Dr. Biren Nadkarni, Senior Orthopedic Consultant and Surgeon. He will be available in person at his clinic - Joint & Bone Solutions situated at Hauz Khas, New Delhi. He can also be reached at Sitaram Bhartia Institute and Holy Family Hospital.

What are the common types of Hip Pain?

Hip pain can be caused by many factors be it age or an injury. Some of the reasons are mentioned below:
𝐇𝐢𝐩 𝐀𝐫𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐬: Osteoarthritis, the most common type of hip arthritis is the general wear-and-tear of the cartilage in the hip joint.
𝐇𝐢𝐩 𝐅𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞: Older people suffering from osteoporosis, a condition that leads to the thinning of bone tissue and loss of bone density over time, are especially prone to hip fractures.
𝐌𝐮𝐬𝐜𝐥𝐞 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧: When the muscle is overstretched or torn.
𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 (𝐇𝐢𝐩 𝐏𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫): A region of injured tissue where blood capillaries have ruptured.
𝐎𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐬 𝐩𝐮𝐛𝐢𝐬: Osteitis pubis is the inflammation of the pubic symphysis.
𝐇𝐢𝐩 𝐁𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐬: Inflammation of the bursa over the outside of the hip joint can cause pain with hip movement.
𝐈𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐩𝐬𝐨𝐚𝐬 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐧𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐇𝐢𝐩: The muscle, iliopsoas (hip flexor), that runs along the front of the hip, connecting the spine to the femur. If special care isn’t taken to properly stretch the iliopsoas before rigorous activity, its muscles and tendons may tighten, causing iliopsoas impingement.
𝐇𝐢𝐩 𝐋𝐚𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐓𝐞𝐚𝐫: When a labral tear of the hip occurs, a piece of this tissue can become pinched in the joint, causing pain and "catching" sensations with movement.
𝐋𝐨𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐁𝐨𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐬: A loose body is a small piece of dislodged cartilage or bone that floats within the joint causing sharp pain during movement.
𝐀𝐯𝐚𝐬𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐫 𝐍𝐞𝐜𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐬: Avascular Necrosis (AVN) is a condition resulting from a lack of blood supply to the femoral head, causing part of its bone to die.
𝐅𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐫 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭: Femoroacetablar impingement (FAI) is a condition where a bone spurs forms along the edge of the ball-and-socket hip joint.

Consult Dr. Biren Nadkarni, a Senior Orthopedic Consultant, and Surgeon, if you are feeling pain in your hip joints. Get yourself diagnosed by Dr. Biren Nadkarni.
