What conditions are treated with Arthroscopy Surgery?

Arthroscopy is a procedure in which an orthopedic surgeon inserts a narrow tube attached to a fiber-optic camera through a small incision to diagnose and treat joint conditions affecting joints such as the knee, shoulder, elbow, ankle, hip, and wrist. The camera at the end of the instrument transmits images to the monitor that help surgeons to view the inside of the joint for better treatment.

Conditions treated with arthroscopy include:
• Lose bone fragments
• Damaged or torn cartilage
• Inflamed joint linings
• Torn ligaments
• Scarring within joints

Consult Dr. Biren Nadkarni, a Senior Orthopedic Consultant and Surgeon, if you are feeling pain in your joints. Dr. Biren Nadkarni will be available in person at his clinic - Joint & Bone Solutions situated at Hauz Khas, New Delhi. He can be reached at Sitaram Bhartia Institute and Holy Family Hospital also.

What is the Difference between Meniscus Repair and Partial Meniscectomy?

The meniscus is a shock-absorbing pad of cartilage in the knee that lubricates, supports, and protects the bones in the knee joint. An athletic injury, heavy lifting, or aging can damage the meniscus which may lead to a progression of osteoarthritis. Minor tears can often heal on their own without surgery, but more severe tears often require surgery. Depending on the extent of the injury and the importance of preserving the meniscus as much as possible, an orthopedic surgeon may recommend meniscus repair or meniscectomy surgery.

In meniscus repair, the surgeon inserts an arthroscope (optic tube) along the tear to bind it using sutures. Over time, these sutures are absorbed by the body leaving healed and repaired meniscus.  However, in meniscectomy, a tiny device is inserted to remove the torn meniscus and the damaged part of the meniscus is trimmed to give it a smooth edge known as a partial meniscectomy. The recovery time is lesser as compared to recovery in meniscus repair.

If you are feeling pain around the knee, and it increases while putting pressure or weight, it could be a meniscus tear. Consult Dr. Biren Nadkarni, a Senior Orthopedic Consultant, and Surgeon in person at his clinic - Joint & Bone Solutions situated at Hauz Khas, New Delhi. He can also be reached at Sitaram Bhartia Institute and Holy Family Hospital.

What Does A Meniscus Tear Feel Like?

The meniscus is a Crescent-shaped cartilage that acts as a shock absorber between the shinbone and the thighbone. It can be torn due to sudden twists or degenerative changes that happen due to age. In fact, a meniscal tear is one of the most common knee injuries.

Symptoms of a meniscus tear include:
• Pain in the knee
• Swelling
• A popping sensation during the injury
• Difficulty in bending and straightening the leg
• Feeling of Knee lock up or Knee get stuck

In the beginning, the pain may manageable. But once the inflammation sets in, your knee will probably hurt quite a bit. If the pain increases, consult Dr Biren Nadkarni for the proper diagnosis and the best treatment. He will be available in person at his clinic - Joint & Bone Solutions situated at Hauz Khas, New Delhi. He can also be reached at Sitaram Bhartia Institute and Holy Family Hospital.

What is MPFL Reconstruction?

The Medial Patellofemoral Ligament (MPFL) is a ligament that attaches the kneecap (patella) and the femur, the long bone of the thigh. MPFL helps in stabilizing the kneecap and prevent it from moving outward or dislocate from its position.

Sometime, this ligament (MPFL) gets injured when the kneecap (Patella) is dislocated. Such kind of knee injury is very common among Athletes or patients with an underlying abnormality of the knee.

Depending upon the condition, MPFL can be treated using NSAIDs and physical therapy. If the injury is severe, your orthopedic surgeons will either try to repair the ligament, or reconstruct the ligament using graft technique.

If you have history of recurrent Patella dislocations consult Dr. Biren Nadkarni, a Senior Orthopedic Consultant and Surgeon,at his clinic - Joint & Bone Solutions situated at HauzKhas, New Delhi. He can also be reached at Holy Family Hospital or Sitaram Bhartia Institute.

When to see Orthopedic Surgeon for Arthroscopy Knee Surgery?

If the patient is feeling continuous pain in his knee and is not getting better with traditional treatment such as medication, cortisone injection, or physiotherapy, in such a case an orthopedic surgeon may advise knee arthroscopy to look into the underlying knee issue. In particular, knee arthroscopy is often used to:

- assess the extent of the damage

- the surgeon can use images from the scope to repair torn ligaments, remove a torn or damaged meniscus, extract loose bone fragments or perform other treatments

Consult Dr. Biren Nadkarni, a Senior Orthopedic Consultant, and Surgeon, if you are feeling pain around your knee and need the best advice to get relief from it. What is the difference between Arthroscopy and Arthroplasty?

Arthroscopy is a minimal-invasive procedure involving a tiny incision to allow the insertion of a state-of-the-art scope to look into your affected joint. The scope has a camera on end to transmit images to a monitor for surgeons to view. The second incision allows orthopedic surgeons to insert small instruments to assess, diagnose and even treat issues with joints immediately. Arthroscopy can be performed on joints including knees, hips, shoulders, ankles, elbows, and wrists.

On the other hand, Arthroplasty is more commonly known as joint replacement surgery. It is a major open surgery in which the degenerative joints are replaced with an artificial joint. The surgery aims to relieve joint pain and increase the range of movement, thereby helping to improve mobility.

Consult Dr. Biren Nadkarni, a Senior Orthopedic Consultant, and Surgeon, to know more about the options you can opt to relieve the pain. He will be available in person at his clinic - Joint & Bone Solutions situated at Hauz Khas, New Delhi. Dr. Biren can also be reached at Sitaram Bhartia Institute and Holy Family Hospital also.

Common Knee conditions treated with Arthroscopy Surgery

Arthroscopy surgery is a minimal-invasive procedure in which a small incision is made to insert a specialized pencil-like instrument to look into the affected joint. The instrument or scope consists of optical fiber and has a camera on the end to transmit images to surgeons to view. The second incision allows orthopedic surgeons to insert a small instrument to diagnose and even treat issues with joints immediately.

Knee Arthroscopy surgery has become a common and safe surgery performed by Orthopedic surgeons nowadays. Patients can go home on the same day of surgery.

Below are the lists of common knee arthroscopic surgical procedures performed on the knee as follows:
•    Torn meniscus
•    Removal of loose fragments
•    Treatment of cartilage deficiencies
•    ACL Reconstruction
•    Baker’s Cyst

Consult Dr. Biren Nadkarni, a Senior Orthopedic Consultant, and Surgeon, if you are feeling pain around your knee and need the best advice to get relief from it. Locking in the Knee - What does that Mean?

The locked knee is a term used when a person is not capable to bend or straighten their knee. There are two types of the locked knee — true and pseudo. In True locked knee, the knee joint gets locked in one position and is unable to move at all. Whereas in Pseudo locked knee, a person's knee is physically capable to move, but the body discourages knee movement due to severe pain and swelling.

Causes of true locked knee include:

• Meniscal tear

• Loose bodies in the knee

• Patella dislocation

• Knee joint inflammation

Causes of the pseudo-locked knee include:

• pain from a knee injury

• inflammation from injury or degenerative joint disease (osteoarthritis)

• inflammation of the knee joint tissue - plica syndrome

• patellar maltracking, where the kneecap does not move correctly

If you are experiencing a locked knee, you should see an Orthopedic Surgeon such as Dr. Biren Nadkarni as soon as possible for a proper diagnosis and treatment. He will be available in person at his clinic - Joint & Bone Solutions situated at Hauz Khas, New Delhi as well as through online consultation. Treat Meniscus injury without surgery

There are different types of meniscus tears — some tears heal on their own while others require surgical treatment. If the tear is in the inner two-thirds, which lack blood flow, the tear cannot be repaired and may need to be trimmed or removed surgically. However, if the tear is on the outer one-third of the meniscus, chances are it may heal on its own because it has a rich blood supply that helps in regenerating meniscus tissue — or help it heal after surgical repair. The non-surgical treatment for tears that can heal on their own may include:
• Physical therapy
• RICE: Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation
• Anti-inflammatory medications

For more severe tears, surgery is typically the best course of treatment. Let your Orthopedic surgeon take the decision on the kind of treatment after examining the knee.

Consult Dr. Biren Nadkarni, a Senior Orthopedic Consultant and Surgeon, if you feel pain, swelling or stiffness, it could be Meniscus Tear that may require surgery. Dr. Biren Nadkarni will be available in person at his clinic - Joint & Bone Solutions situated at Hauz Khas, New Delhi as well as through online consultation. Meniscus Tear

The meniscus is a piece of cartilage in your knee providing cushioning effect and protects bones from getting rubbed with each other. However, like other knee injuries, meniscus tears can happen to anyone involved in high-impact activities. It occurs when an athlete changes direction suddenly or occurs at the same time as other knee injuries like an ACL injury. In fact, a meniscal tear is one of the most frequently occurring cartilage injuries of the knee. When it happens, you might feel

• A popping sensation

• Swelling or stiffness

• Pain, especially when twisting or rotating your knee

• Difficulty in bending and straightening the leg

• Feeling of the locked knee in place when you try to move it

If you feel pain, swelling or stiffness, it could be Meniscus Tear that may require surgery. Consult Dr. Biren Nadkarni, a Senior Orthopedic Consultant, and Surgeon, at his clinic - Joint & Bone Solutions situated at Hauz Khas, New Delhi as well as through online consultation.
