Knee Replacement Surgery is a corrective surgery undertaken to eliminate a damaged knee joint. A knee joint can get damaged due to various reasons, the most common being arthritis. Knee replacement is actually knee resurfacing surgery since it involves the surfacing of the joints.

A knee joint consists of three bones and several ligaments. The three bones are Femur bone (thigh bone), Tibia Bone (Shinbone), and Patella (knee cap).

Knee replacement (also known as knee arthroplasty) is actually a misnomer because only the surface of the bone is replaced. The knee replacement procedure consists of four main steps - the bone preparation which involves removal of damaged cartilage and the bony parts, positioning of the metal implants where the prosthetic parts are cemented or pressed fit into the bone, resurfacing of the Patellar bone, and the final step includes insertion of a medical-grade spacer between the bones.
