How Does my Artificial Knee Stay in Place after Knee Replacement?

Knee replacement is a complex surgical procedure in which the damaged knee is resurfaced with artificial implants. There are different types of implants made up of metals, plastic, and ceramic. While you are getting prepared for the surgery, your orthopedic surgeon may suggest an implant that will be used for your surgery. Choosing the right implant may depend upon various factors such as age, weight, activity, and general health.

Points to remember after Knee replacement surgery:
• Do not get involved in heavy impact activity even after full recovery
• Keep up with your exercise routine to strengthen muscles around the knee, which supports the artificial knee implant
• Proper weight management will help you in putting less pressure on your new implant resulting in less wear and tear

Taking good care of an operated knee can increase the life of the artificial implants that can last for more than 20 years.

How long do I expect my Knee Joint to last?

Knee replacement surgery is a complex surgical procedure in which a diseased part is replaced with prosthetic implants made up of metal, plastic, and ceramic. These implants can too wear out over time. In general, common types of knee replacements can last from 15 to 20 years.

𝑭𝒂𝒄𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒔 𝑨𝒇𝒇𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑳𝒐𝒏𝒈𝒆𝒗𝒊𝒕𝒚

With different types of knee replacements and countless different types of patients, there is no rule to define how long a knee replacement will last in a particular individual. Although, some of the factors that determine the longevity of implants are as follow:

𝑷𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒔 𝒂𝒈𝒆: Younger patients are more active and require more years out of their knee replacement. Patients who have a knee replacement in their 50s or younger can usually expect to require a revision knee replacement in their lifetime.

𝑨𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒗𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒆𝒔: Some activities may not be appropriate for patients with a knee replacement as they may put excessive stress on the knee replacement, causing the parts to wear out more quickly.

𝑾𝒆𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕 𝑴𝒂𝒏𝒂𝒈𝒆𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕: More the weight of an individual with a knee replacement, the more the stress on the implants. It is always advised to maintain a normal body weight.

𝑨𝒗𝒐𝒊𝒅𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑪𝒐𝒎𝒑𝒍𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔: Some medical conditions may lead to complications affecting joint replacement. Among these, patients with osteoporosis should take extra measures as it can affect the functioning of the implant.

Consult 𝑫𝒓. 𝑩𝒊𝒓𝒆𝒏 𝑵𝒂𝒅𝒌𝒂𝒓𝒏𝒊, a Senior Orthopedic Consultant, and Surgeon, to know more about the implants. He will be available in person at his clinic - 𝑱𝒐𝒊𝒏𝒕 & 𝑩𝒐𝒏𝒆 𝑺𝒐𝒍𝒖𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔 situated at Hauz Khas, New Delhi as well as through online consultation. Precautions after Knee Replacement Surgery

After your Total knee replacement surgery, the following precautions can help in avoiding post-surgery complications or any damage to the operated knee.

Taking care of Wound
Make sure that the wound is dry and healed completely. Consult your Orthopedic Surgeon if any complication arises.

Prevent Blood Clot and DVT
Preventing blood clot plays an important role in the recovery process. There is also a possibility of developing a DVT after surgery. To avoid such situations, your doctor or physical therapist will guide you with the following approach:
• Specific exercises to restore full range of motion, increase lower body strength and improve circulation
• Anti-clotting medicine to prevent blood clots

Other points to remember after Total Knee Replacement Surgery are as follow:
• Take the support of cane or crutches to walk around for the first two weeks
• Don’t sit with your legs crossed or twist, prefer sitting on a chair as high as your operated knee
• Don’t keep sitting or standing for too long
• Prefer sleeping on the non-operated knee bodyside
• When it comes to climbing the stair, climb one stair at a time

Consult Dr. Biren Nadkarni, a Senior Orthopedic Consultant, and Surgeon, available in person at his clinic - Joint & Bone Solutions situated at Hauz Khas, New Delhi as well as through online consultation. He can be reached at Sitaram Bhartia Institute and Holy Family Hospital also.
