Role of Meniscus

The structure of knee joint consists of three bones - the thighbone or “femur”, the shinbone or “tibia” and the kneecap or “patella”. In-between the thighbone and the shinbone there are two crescent shaped cartilages presents known as "meniscus”. These cartilages are very tough and have rubbery like structure that acts as a shock absorber between the shinbone and the thighbone.

Meniscus also helps in dispersing the body weight and reduces friction during movement. However, it can become weak due to over stress or repetitive stress and tends to rupture. This is one of the most common of knee injuries seen in overweight people and athletes. A torn meniscus causes pain, swelling and locking in the joint.

Consult Dr. Biren Nadkarni, a Senior Orthopedic Consultant and Surgeon, if you feel pain, swelling and stiffness, it could be Meniscus Tear that may require a surgery. Dr. Biren Nadkarni will be available in person at his clinic - Joint & Bone Solutions situated at Hauz Khas, New Delhi as well as through online consultation. He can be reached at SitaramBhartia Institute and Holy Family Hospital at Okhla also.
