What is Chondromalacia Patella?

Chondromalacia patella is a kind of knee pain that occurs when the cartilage on the undersurface of the kneecap (Patella) becomes soft and breaks down. Pain is felt when the kneecap comes in contact with the thigh bone (femur).

What causes chondromalacia patella?
Abnormal knee cap positioning, tightness or weakness of the knee muscles, too much activity involving the knee, and flat feet may increase the chances of chondromalacia patella.

Consult Dr. Biren Nadkarni, a Senior Orthopedic Consultant and Surgeon, if you are feeling pain behind the kneecap, below the kneecap, or on the sides of the kneecap. He will be available in person at his clinic - Joint & Bone Solutions situated at Hauz Khas, New Delhi as well as through online consultation. He can be reached at Sitaram Bhartia Institute and Holy Family Hospital also.
